One of the most exciting things about the gift of music is the excitement of writing your own songs and the joy you receive hearing other people sing them. The main motivation for me getting involved in the discipline of learning music engraving and proper notation was to set my own songs to music. For over 30 years I have been writing cantatas and choruses for our church choir. Then quite a few years back our song leader brought a tune to me that he wrote and asked if I could write the chords and harmony for it. As I listened to it I realized it was a better melody than I could have ever written. But brother Bob lacked the tools to set the melody to proper harmony. So we teamed up together and for years I asked Bob to write the melodies and I set his melodies to hymn style songs. The songs we produced I thought were far better than the ones that I produced alone (Ecc. 4:9). All this was before the days of internet popularity.
P.S. Below is one of the songs that our song leader brought to me that I engraved and set to music. Bob handed me a melody and a rough idea of the harmonic chord changes and I took it from there. Also enclosed is a sound file with some of Bob's children and grandchildren singing the song. Bob Snyder is now in heaven but his family and church still remember him in the songs he left with us. This is one of the great things about writing music and having it properly engraved; it can be enjoyed by family members for years to come. In fact when I went to see Bob just before he died he asked me to distribute this song and keep his memory alive by singing it often in church.
